It's so fun receiving mail--last month I received a beautiful package from Tandy Kunkle, an SF-based illustrator. Last December I attended the Easy Bay Alternative Zine Fest, a wonderful event showcasing and celebrating independent works, and I came across Tandy's work. I pre-ordered her illustrated zine, 50 Gals and completely forgot about my order until I received a gorgeous little package in the mail a few weeks later. I even received a beautiful holiday card to send out to a friend! Once again, I was struck by her illustrations, they're so creative and detailed--see for yourself!
Zinefests are always fun, and it's a great place to explore new ideas and find inspiration. I first attended SF Zine Fest last September and from then on I was hooked. I was inspired by all of the works I saw--art, writings, comics, it was endless! I was like a kid in a candy store--there was so much to explore and ponder. It's also a great place to really reflect on my current practices and reading other people's works reminds me of the many realities people experience--the social injustices, the plight of capitalism, the experiences of people of color and marginalized communities, resistance, and alternative models of living. Out of darkness, despair, happiness, and survival come beautiful forms of expression, and the zine fests are definitely places to witness these expressions in action.
