This month seems to be all about abandoned bases, and today's hike was no different-- I made it out to another abandoned missile base located in Marin, CA. Great views, great company, and plenty of abandoned forts, bunkers, and stations to explore! In addition to old bases, I also spotted several types of lichen and succulents along the way:
Lichens and mosses
Wild succulents growing along the cliffs and hills!
One of the first bunkers we saw and a view of San Francisco from the sniper bunker.
Hill 88, a former radar station
San Francisco from the Marin Headlands
A view of San Francisco from the radar station
Last but not least, toward the end of our hike we came across Battery Townsley and discovered an old gun pit teeming with life. Battery Townsley gun pit now filled with water, plants, and newts. It seems so strange that community of newts are surviving in an old gun emplacement, but I guess that's the beauty of nature--there are so many ways to survive and thrive.
Just when you think you've seen it all...ah, life is full of surprises.
